Just Another Spring Sports Weekend in Maryland

Preakness 2012Memorial Day is just a week away and summer is right around the corner but this past weekend proved the Maryland spring sports scene is in full gear. And what a weekend it was!

To kick things off, four in-state rivals took to the lacrosse field where both the University of Maryland Women's and Men's teams won games to advance to the NCAA Lacrosse Final Four. The Maryland Men beat rival and seeded Johns Hopkins 11-5 in Annapolis to advance to a semifinal showdown this weekend versus Duke while the Lady Terps beat Loyola 17-11.

Then a record crowd of over 121,000 sports fans and infield revelers including yours truly  converged on Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore to witness Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another charge down 8-5 favorite Bodemeister from behind to claim The Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the Triple Crown, by a neck. Belmont awaits. Bode does not.

Finally, thousands of fans made the short drive south to the Nation's Capital to attend the weekend's "Battle of the Beltway" series that saw the American League East leading Baltimore Orioles take two out of three games from the Washington Nationals in interleague baseball action.

Let me repeat - American League East leading Baltimore Orioles! And hey, those Nats are not too shabby either!

What a great start to the warm weather season and it just gets better from here. We'll see you down the shore for the unofficial start to summer this weekend hon. Feel free to buy us a Crush!
